This is the story of an unconventional game played to the death, only the participants don’t really understand that they are just pawns in a rivalry that has gone on far too long. It is the Night Circus that is their playing field and the weapon of choice is magic, though there won’t be any waving of wands or chanting of spells here. In many ways, that aren’t so oblivious, mystery and intrigue are the catalysts to changes in the player’s favor whether they are actively playing or not.

The best thing about this book is the romance. It sparkles and shimmers and made me smile each time, whether the couple were physically together in the same scene or not. Ms. Morgenstern makes you feel the two are together always, whether they realize it or not. That's a wonderful gift for a romance writer and I hope to see more from her in the future.

This is a potentially fascinating novel based around a truly magical circus. There is real magic involved, not just smoke and mirrors. The Night Circus appears without warning outside various cities and towns, runs through the night and at no other time, and is entirely in black and white. It sounds intriguing.
In Erin Morgenstern’s book we get to see the circus, see how it came about, and see the lives of some of those involved in designing it, performing in it, and visiting it. But through it a ...more

This book has a lot of, what writers like to call, texture. There is a certain magical and ephemeral feel woven right from the beginning. It makes you hold your breath expecting to witness something great. But that something never arrives. It is almost like a wizard pompously flashing his wand and making grand movements with it, only to make a feather flinch, instead of soaring in the sky.

Beautifully written story. The book jacket description may be slightly misleading, implying this is simply Celia and Marco's love story and that is not the case. The circus is the main character encompassing so many lives. While Marco and Celia are indeed main components, they do not have MUCH interaction directly with each other until @ 275 pages into the tale. This is the most original story I have enjoyed in some time and I look forward to Morgensterns next creation.
