The Maltese Falcon is a deserved classic of Noir Detective fiction. The writing was crisp and no-nonsense and I could picture Humphrey Bogart playing this part, even though I've never seen it. . .yet. Dashiell Hammett tailored it smoothly so that Bogart was a natural for the big screen edition.

this is a tightly written detective novel. Sharp characterization, every shifted eyebrow moves the plot forward, and a twisty plot to keep the pages turning.
I saw the movie years ago. I couldn't remember what all happened, so it didn't spoil it for me.It seemed to follow the book closely.
This was probably a racy book in it's time: adultery, sex and disrespect for authority. That is ho hum run of the mill stuff these days, but was not the usual fare in 1929. ...more
