So much of this fiction writing tool was fantastic. My favorite is the chapter on proportion. This said, I didn't agree with the strength in which some of the advice was put forward, this-way-or-the-highway statements, when in some cases, there are multiple schools of thought on the correct path forward. Beware the places they say, Do it this way not that way, but offer no reasoning. Also, calling something 'hack,' which they did a fair amount, is not logic enough. ...more

I started out reading this book thinking I would fly through it just to get an idea of the content without trying to apply any of it. Then I was given the challenge to do some editing and this book more than proved its worth. A really good book on how to improve the mechanics and style of your writing, including dialogue, voice, and point of view. I found myself identifying many things that I know I do, and while it will now probably be painful to go through and read my own work, I feel like now I am armed to actually make some changes!

“There was a time when your characters were convincingly worldly and streetwise if they swore a lot. But profanity has been so overused in past years that nowadays it’s more a sign of a small vocabulary.” Love this!

The book teaches about nuance, voice and taking out unnecessary words (among other things). An excellent guide to sharpen your writing and a book I think all authors should read, no matter where they are on the writer’s journey.

A must-have in every author’s library.

Helpful tool for writers. You can read it cover-to-cover or, as recommended by my editor, you can read the sections you need.
