Such a polarizing little book. People love it or hate it. Me? I love it AND hate it.
I changed my star rating from three to four and back to three and back to four over and over again while I wrote this. Wherever it is when I'm done writing is where I'll leave it.
Holden is an insufferable little shit. The book is a meander through minefields with no character or plot arcs. Stream of consciousnesses seldom engages me, but its worse when its not a consciousness that grows or draws any conclusions ...more

The scary thing about this book is that several assasains (at least) were found to have this book on them when they tried to shoot the president or other famous figure. Manchurian candidate trigger words? I sometimes wonder. Read this a few times as a teen and liked it, although I don't remember much about Holden Caulfield except his life was a morass of emothions.

This was my first time reading this book, and from the beginning I was hooked in by Holden's voice. To be honest, I knew the name Holden Caulfield without ever having read this book, but I'm pretty sure I thought he was a real person, not a character in a book. :P I love that as I write more and more class books, more and more "ah!" moments occur, and more connections are made in my head. Yeah, I'm never going to finish this one.
I never had to read it in school and figured I'd go ahead and give it a shot, as occasionally I like to pick up something classic that's missing from my earlier education.
I'm not saying its bad, it's just not all that interesting to me-- at least over the first 30 pages or so. I've tried at least three times, and I give up. It's not my style, and honestly with all the stuff that's out there that is my style (some classics included,) I'm not willing to wa ...more
