Horrified. Mystified. That’s how this book left me.

“Our heartache poured into one another like water from cup to cup. Each time I told my story, I lost a bit, the smallest drop of pain. It was that day that I knew I wanted to tell the story of my family. Because horror on Earth is real and it is every day. It is like a flower or like the sun: it cannot be contained.”

On its face, it’s a pretty passage. But the metaphors are so overdone in five sentences. And this is also where the story hops genr

I read this book when it came out in 2002, and found that many times I had to set the book down because it felt so sad or the evil embodied by pedophile neighbor Mr. Harvey just seemed all too real. I really enjoyed this touching and powerful book. I appreciated the author's ability to connect the reader with Susie, the victim of a horrific crime committed by a very evil man. This wasn’t at all what I was expecting. It was full of rambling, jumped from one place in time to another with no warning, and was basically plotless. I kept waiting for things to connect, for there to be a reason for the things happening, but it never came.

If you want to read about the different ways people handle grief in a novel form, then you’d probably enjoy this.
