Beloved is something really different among ghost stories. It startled me the first time I read it, and continues to do so on every re-read. When a person's figurative haunting becomes flesh and walks in the front door? Shivers every time. Even though I remembered a lot of the story since it hadn't been THAT long since I last read it, it still felt fresh and different and new.

This is still the most beautifully constructed, masterfully structured, brilliant piece of art I've gotten to read in my life. This was my fourth (I think) reading and it had been more than 18 years since I'd last read it. And still, STILL I cried at the end from just how incredibly powerful it was. It should be read aloud. Just excellent. A book I'll remember forever. Though highly complex and difficult to get sometimes, the book along with the movie made for a wonderful combination that beat all. The book helped to understand the movie better, and the movie helped to understand the book better. I thought the book was poetic and the story amazing.
