Imagine a monochromatic existence in a world of sameness...the purpose being to foster peace, cooperation and general well-being but the flip side is that it eliminates things that make us uniquely human, such as ambition, choice, discrimination, desire, pride.

This book had everything against it before I started reading. I'm not fond of children's books (though, technically, 12 and up isn't a children's book.) I've been working my way through "classics" - some of which have been truly awful. While this book was not from my list of classics, it did win an award, which was another strike against it. It was in a list of books that are good examples of "world-building." With more than a little trepidation, I started listening - and was quickly hooked.
