I have mixed feelings about this book. I loved the reminiscing parts, the younger Lisa, her spirit, her sense of adventure and I did like older Lisa but because of how the strands were seamlessly interwoven, I could not always distinguish and thus older Lisa sounded young and younger Lisa too old. Just typing this, I think that may have been the point. Still, loved reading about the Haisla community, my heart broke several times and I long now to see BC.

Monkey Beach focuses on a Haisla community in Canada and particularly on one family who at the beginning of the novel are dealing with a possibly tragic event. As quickly becomes clear, however, tragedy, loss and violence have been scattered throughout their lives. Lisa the main character, who has a strong voice throughout, narrates the novel in a nonlinear fashion from the present day to events of the past, talking about her beloved Grandma, Uncle Mick and her friends and cousins.
