The Professor is an expert in Mathematics. After a car accident his memory is blocked in 1975. He lives alone in a little house in the back of his sister-in-law’s garden. His main problem is that his short term memory only lasts 80 minutes. As a result, he wears a black suit everyday that he pins little notes on to remind him of things he has just experienced. This one sticks with you. Incredible characters, and you learn some math!
The Housekeeper and the professor is loosely based on The Man Who Loved Only Numbers, a biography of the mathematician Paul Erdös. Using the biography, Ogawa brilliantly constructs this poignant story that carefully elucidates the nature of impermanence and interdependence that surrounds us all but we either refuse to acknowledge it or pretend it doesn’t exist. The story of companionship is delightful but all the math problems I hated.
A beautiful book, hard to describe. The relationship between a housekeeper (and her son) and a genius mathematician with short term memory loss.
