Whoever said LOTR was boring is spouting pure and utter lies! Boring! Are you kidding me? How can anyone say this is boring? As for the complaints of too much scenery descriptions, these are lovely descriptions that are quite captivating. Poetry, pure poetry! With that said, I will admit it took me some chapters, not actually that many, to get into it. Having seen the movies before, the beginning was hard to get through because it matched very closely and the adventure had not yet begun. Having seen the movies before, the beginning was hard to get through because it matched very closely and the adventure had not yet begun. Once I was past that point though, it was smooth sailing.
Unfortunately, since I had seen the movies before, even though I hadn't paid full attention to them always, I found that whilst reading I would always be waiting for scenes from the movies to happen, but since of course it is always different in the books, I was never sure if I what I was reading would turn into a scene from the movies. I could go on, but I won't except to say that LOTR is so inspiring to read. Tolkien's world is so complete and well-thought out that it feels so real. Before I even read this, I read fantasy books that tried and failed to be something even close to LOTR. But they all fall short. I think writers are often so enamored with his world that they just write knock-off versions but then forget that his world alone is not what makes his book epic. It is the feelings that must be captured. The excitement, the importance of the quest, the feeling that all hope is lost even though it is not. Gosh, I feel all hope is lost for this little Hobbit about to embark into the heart of Mordor, and I even know how it all ends! That! That is what writers should be inspired by, convincing the reader of the importance of whatever it may be in their books and taking them along on their character's epic journey, holding them in suspense with small fails and victories along the way. ...more
