This is the first book in the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley. The story is set in England in 1950 and has the ambiance of an older time. I thought initially that the book was written for a younger audience, since the main character is eleven, but I couldn't imagine this book appealing to children. After reading the interview with the author at the end of the book, I realize that it really was meant for adults.

A mystery with an 11 year old heroine! but such an unusual one. Flavia's favorite thing is chemistry. She is tolerated by her neighbors because of her parents' positions in society. She is definitely not a "girly" girl. A man is found dead in her father's yard. It turns out that he was an old school mate of her dad's. He is suspected of the crime and is arrested. Flavia is determined to clear her dad. The twists and turns are what entertains while reading this book.

It combines long buried secrets with rare stamps and amateur magic. But it’s Flavia’s vibrant personality and precocious intelligence that makes the story.

Oh, Flavia. I really did love her and will probably read more of her adventures. However, I was disinterested in the plot of the story by the end. Her ingenious ability to play chemist and solve clues was entertaining, just couldn't stay interested in the mystery. Probably would give it 3 1/2 stars, if I was able.
