I see no need to repeat the plot since almost every one does that. I will put this as one of my favorite books of the recent years. After finishing it I wanted to read it again because I feel sure I missed one or more of the sardonic quips the Major and occasionally Mrs. Ali blurt out. This is the reason that I read! What an absolutely delightful, adorable, charming, sweet tale of mature love, with multiple other plots and themes swarming around the family, friends, and villagers (race, religion, greed, selfishness, age, cultural, grief, social class, etc. that stand as obstacles to genuine and loving relationships). 4 stars. Another cute book with a lovable old man main character! I enjoyed the romance between Mrs. Ali and Major Pettigrew very much. I wish they were real people. I did find him to be a little soft though. He was a major and I would think he could stood up to his ridiculous son and family better than he did. That, combined with the silliness that happens in the ending, makes me have to knock it down a star. Such a shame because this was a 5 star read up until that point.
