Extremely moving account of the lives damaged or destroyed by the roundup of French Jews by French policeman for deportation to concentration camps during WW11. Switching between the present and the past the author creates a tension filled narrative describing the horrors of the past and the ignorance and indifference of the present. The phrase "the banality of evil" comes to mind.

The history part of this book was excellent, but the contemporary part became a bit annoying. I had figured out how it would end (although that part was a bit ambiguous), and I'm glad all was resolved, but I just didn't like the contemporary characters. LOVED the WWII history.

I'm not even saying this to be politically correct, or whatever: everything not having to do with the holocaust could have been excised, and it would have been a much more interesting book.

Read this for my book club. I did like the book and would give it 3.5 stars if I could. Wish there was more of Sarah's storyline.
