Although I read this on a road trip, with four kids making loud (and sometimes violent) nodes in the back, and with a driver singing along to the radio in annoying falsettos, I couldn't help but be gripped by this short and simple novel.

I read this in high school and remember that it was very emotionally intense and a very memorable story. It's fairly short, which I think adds to the impact - there aren't a lot of wasted words.

Every time I read this book, I get that familiar wrenching in my gut. It is so good! Steinbeck does a maserful job of describing the lives and dreams of the men. It amazes me how they have adapted the dream of the house with the white picket fence to include some land and farming. They love their work, just don't love doing it for someone else. The ending, of course, is one of the most dramatic I have ever read.
