First off, I have to say this is only my second Crichton novel. I read Jurassic Park back when the movie came out but haven't felt like reading anything else by him since. That being said, I enjoyed Pirate Latitudes. The novel does have its shortcomings but you have to wonder if this is because it wasn't truly finished. It's hard to say. This book was found on Crichton's computer after his death so it's possible that this wasn't the intended finished product. I liked it though and I'm curious to ...more

Good read. It only took me a day and a half to get thru. The story is set in the Caribbean in the 1600's, Charles Hunter is the privateer who sets out to capture a Spanish galleon loaded with treasure. Lots of "piratey" stuff goes on, battles at sea, people dying, hurricanes with ships limping back into port afterward. I liked it.

This was pretty good for a pirate book. Interesting concept. It was ok.

2.5 stars. Started off well and promised to be an interesting, piratical adventure story. But out of the blue, the final chapters were packed with cannibals, witchcraft, a Kraken attack, betrayal, jail-break, mayhem and murder. It all seemed like a very unnecessary afterthought, that detracted from what could have been a well plotted, interesting story.

This is why unfinished books should not be published posthumously. I think Michael Crichton would have had some serious editing to do.

For my first audio book, Pirate Latitudes was a nice read. I did feel that the first three quarters of the book was drawn out, but the ending really pulled me in, kind of a bummer that I had to wait almost nine hours for the on-the-edge-of-your-seat part. Oh well, at least I have now been introduced to the wonderful world of audio books.
