Katherine Howe allows her academic background shine in this book. She weaves history with fiction, however, the history plot shines more often than the fictional plot. Some readers might think its cumbersome while others might enjoy it, especially if they are interested in the Salem Witch Trials. The whole story runs similar to the movie "Practical Magic," in my opinion, with a heavier emphasis on the history.

4.5. Really well done. I like how succinct it is and can really see how others in the same genre have been inspired by the storyline.

Katherine Kellgren does a nice job narrating.

Very interesting for a first novel ... a little uneven in places, but the story is intriguing enough to pull you through the rough patches. The "interludes" in history were handled well, but trying to decipher the phoenetic spelling of Colonial Yankee speech was a chore in itself. An astute reader can stay a step or more ahead of our heroine, but even so, the story remains an enjoyable read.

This book is a great blend of magic, history, and contemporary fiction. If you have any interest in the Salem witch trials and don't mind witchcraft, this is a book for you.
