OK, now I am officially done with books about Salem and witchcraft. Well, after I read one more. (This is my 12 out of 14 novels on Salem and witchcraft I've read this summer.)
I’m done because this one is a multi-generational novel with storylines in 1692 onward and 1991 in Marblehead, MA, and I’ve just read enough, now. From the title I thought that Deliverance Dane would be related to Reverend Dane, the minister who, along with Parris, determined that must be witchcraft that was affecting Par ...more

Just finished the audio version. This book was semi enjoyable but very predicable. I found myself figuring out what was going on in the story well before the main character, Connie, quite a few times. I don't spend a great deal of time trying to "figure out" the story but prefer to just let it unfold. But, there was a high degree of predictability or the main character is just not that bright at times.

Very interesting for a first novel ... a little uneven in places, but the story is intriguing enough to pull you through the rough patches. The "interludes" in history were handled well, but trying to decipher the phoenetic spelling of Colonial Yankee speech was a chore in itself. An astute reader can stay a step or more ahead of our heroine, but even so, the story remains an enjoyable read.

I've had this book on my bookshelf for years and have never gotten around to it. I found it in audiobook format and decided to listen to it. It is a well written, well-researched story. I liked the characters and liked how the story itself is told. Going back and forth in time can be a bit confusing and troublesome for a reader if the author doesn't do it well. Howe did a good job keeping all the storylines interesting.

This is a fun little book--heavy-handed on the history of Salem witchtrials, so if you are at all familiar with the period/subject you might find some passages a tad tedious. Just skip those paragraphs and move back to the story. I stayed up until 3 a.m. to finish this one, which is a pretty good recommendation.
