This is one of the fastest reads I have ever done dispite having almost 500 pages. It is beautifully illustrated by the author, and the main character, a boy of 12, enters your heart and does not let go. I started it yesterday afternoon after I left from work, and finished it this morning. Oh, and I read it in the Spanish version. Our school did not have the English version available, so I opted for it. It was so beautiful! It is losely based on the life of a real pioneer in the film industry, G ...more

This story is set i the 1930s. A young boy named Hugo is orphaned when his father is killed in a fire while working to restore and automaton. Hugo goes to live with his uncle, a drunkard who lives in the walls of the train station, where he learns to keep the clocks running. Soon, Hugo's uncle disappears and Hugo must keep the clocks going but not let anyone know that he is there alone.

Eventually, Hugo meets Georges, a toymaker, and his goddaughter Isabelle. Georges catches him stealing toys and

It’s cute, I’ll give it that. The idea is cute, too.

This is definitely more for middle schoolers – simplistic, straightforward, etc., etc. It was also imaginative and the drawings were fun. It could almost be a flip-book, where you make your own movie by just flipping through the “stills”. Nicely done, Selznick! For all of that, though, this was almost a book I couldn’t read in one sitting, because I kept getting bored and having to put it down. Good to read in snippets, bad to try to race thro

Hugo is a Parisian orphan living in the train station, in the 1930’s, where his uncle was in charge of the clocks. His father was a clock maker. He meets a toy maker there, who turns out to be the early film magician Georges Melies, who has signed over his films. According to this novel, told in many beautiful panels, as well as words, Melies also made automatons and Hugo is able to repair them. This is beautiful, gorgeous and lyrical makes me want to see the movie based on it “Hugo.”
