This book helped open the way for many mainstream readers to get a glimpse and feel for middle eastern culture and issues. I had studied the Middle East fairly extensively in college and was not shocked and surprised at the book the way that many are. I prefer "Thousand Splendid Suns" since it gives the woman's perspective of the culture but I thought both books were bold and well done. ...more
