I enjoyed this collection of short stories set in Hong Kong and Shanghai during the 30s and 40s even though I felt like I lacked some of the cultural knowledge required to understand many of their nuances. The tension between traditions of the past and growing Westernization comes across very viscerally here. I finally found a collection of short stories that I actually like! This was on my list for a while and I was lucky enough to read it with my Around the World book club. This read to me like the literary equivalent of a Chinese 1940's era film noir. Each of the stories was so visual and fresh. It really struck me how little I know of Chinese literature and how much more reading I have to do to get a grasp of it.
