This graphic novel is technically the prequel for the Sandman series but it should not be read before you read the other 12 volumes in the Sandman series (or 10. 11 and 12 are in the series but they’re not part of the main story). This is one of those prequels that you must save for last because not only does it spoil things for the rest of the series, but you won’t have the appreciation of the works without the rest. It’s Neil Gaiman’s brilliant mind mixed with J.H. Williams III, a man who I’ve never encountered his work before this but now I want to go find even more projects he’s worked on. His artwork was simply stunning. The layout alone wins all the awards in my book. There are 4 page spreads! The story of Morpheus has always been a compelling one but I’ve never been so compelled with his story as I was with this one. Maybe because it was the beginning, but also the end.
