I wasn't sure what I was getting in to with the back cover endorsements. And that's for the best. The surprise of this historical fiction was in the riddle of watching a woman unfold (unravel?) and discover the grit the kept her moving forward over extreme (impossible??) circumstances. The author won't be surprised to know that I (and likely almost every other reader over the age of 50) dovetailed what I remembered of the movie, Out of Africa, between the scenes. I read Beryl Markham's book West into the Night in the 1980's when the movie "Out of Africa" generated a big interest of life in colonial Kenya. At the time Beryl Markham struck me as a strong, independent woman - an anomaly in British colonial society- and the fact that she, too had a romantic relationship with Denys Finch-Hatton made her an interesting bookend to Karen Blixen's story.
