Barnes captures what life was like for Russian composer Shastakovic, who wrote under the iron thumbs of Lenin, Stalin, and Khrushchev. The Noise of Time is very sympathetic to the plight of the great composer and how he waited for Stalin to arrest him after his opera fell out of favor and later how he finally buckled and joined the Communist party under Khrushchev.
