What Members Thought

There is no question that Lolita is one of the many excellent stars in the pantheon of "classic works." And after reading, I agree that it should be there - the plot and especially voice of Humbert Humbert are incredibly unique, the writing thorough an compelling. Nabokov is a master of saying the same thing multiple times over in completely new ways, and for that alone this is a book that anyone wanting to learn how to write should probably read.

Although I did download and enjoy the audiobook version (Jeremy Irons!!) of this, I have to say, Nabokov's wordplay is more easily appreciated in the text version. I found myself at times, when available, playing the audiobook while simultaneously reading with my eyes (Irons reads almost fast enough for this to actually work for me), which allowed me to enjoy it both ways at once.
This is set up as a love story, but it seems much more a window into the author's love of language.
