I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed this book, surprised because it's referenced as a young adult book centred around a 12 year old boy and it doesn't really go anywhere much. However, all the characters are so engaging and interesting that I was happy to accompany Frankie on his often troubled and bewildering path between childhood and adolescence. All in all a very enjoyable and well written read.

A delightful novel about 12 year old Frankie Parsons who lives with a range of ever increasing worries whereas his best friend Gigs seems "gloriously untroubled by worry". Frankie is the youngest of 3 siblings who all call their Dad, Uncle George, and their mother is agoraphobic and hasn't left the house in 9 years. Things seem to ease for Frankie when a new girl arrives at school and they become good friends - her questions help challenge and ease his worries but everything falls apart again on

Actual rating: 3.5 stars. Like most YA novels, tries to do too much. When it's good, it's very good; but it often gives in to maudlin displays of emotion, and nearly drowns under the weight of its emotional complexity.
