I was actually a little disappointed re-reading this book. I remember loving the series when I first read them back in middle school. So maybe it is just because I've grown up that the writing style does not really appeal to me as much. Elena starts off as a really superficial character although she vows she wants to become a better person for Stefan. Why 2 stars???...
I picked up this book because it had been made into the TV series, and it looked interesting.
Sadly found the book lacking and I don't usually have this happen but ... I didn't like the female lead character (Elena) who I found to be just too perfect to the point that she came across as self-centered and conceited (I much preferred the personality of the TV character, can't help but compare).
I also found this too similar in storyline to Twilight butlacking the finese of Meyers.

I didn't like the book until about three quarters of the way through. I feel like it was trying so hard to be the other teen vampire series that it barely developed its own story.
