In Lies and Sorcery by Elsa Morante (translated by Jenny McPhee), Elisa, the orphaned protagonist, resurrects the history of three generations of women in her Sicilian family. Oh dear, dreadful book. I didn’t like her History and this is worse, 800 pages of rambling reflections of 3 generations in Sicily. The blurb on the back compares it to Stendhal, Tolstoy and Proust - which is plain wrong and an insult to those three. This is not literature, it’s more like Mills and Boon - not that I’ve ever read more than a page of those.
