What a beautiful book. I want to go live on an island now.

This kind of pure, effortless prose, which hides an unknowable depth, is I feel the product of long, careful thought. It's wonderful nature writing, yes, but it's also a wise and profound meditation on aging and death, living with nature including all its gifts as well as its force and uncertainty, grief and longing, and solitude. I can't quite articulate my feelings about The Summer Book just yet. There is only this achy feeling in my chest.
