Latitude is easy. (90 - Height of the Sun at noon) on March or Sept equinox = latitude. Adjust for different days of year. Ahh... Longitude is much harder. Sure, you can get pretty close with various techniques, but you need to know the exact time of day (relative to say London) to get precise. The author makes this an adventure book to figure out how to tell time at sea.
