I was about 50 pages in before the story really pulled me in; I also needed some time to get used to how the story was told by a back-and-forth mostly between Velvet and Ginger. They tell the story through their own eyes and experiences. Velvet is a Fresh Air kid who stays with Ginger and Paul and discovers horses (one especially ornery mare with whom she bonds) while there. Velvet Vargas is an 11 year old girl from Brooklyn who is given the opportunity to stay with a family upstate through the fresh air fund. She learns how to ride horses and has a special relationship with a horse named Fugly Girl. The story is told from the perspective of Velvet, Ginger and Paul (her host parents), Sylvia (Velvet’s mother) among others.
