This morning I finished listening to the audible unabridged edition of The Shining by Stephen King. This was an incredible book, and I absolutely loved every second of it. I'd seen the film many times, and the book is superior.

The character of Jack is perfect; he seems like he could be any normal man whose life has been hijacked by circumstances and bad decisions. He is frightening in how relatable he is.

Wendy is more likeable in the book than she is in the film. She's protective of her son, and This morning I finished listening to the audible unabridged edition of The Shining by Stephen King. Wendy is more likeable in the book than she is in the film. She's protective of her son, and loves her husband - wanting their time at The Overlook to bring them closer as a family unit and willing to stand up to Jack when he's having a mood swing, or an aggressive outburst. She serves a more important role in the book, as in the film her character seemed a bit... wet?

Danny is a gifted little boy, and like with Jack, I spent much of the book trying to justify or rationalise his powers. Danny's Shining is medical; he exhibits symptoms much like epilepsy, or another seizure disorder. He's sensitive and simply picking up on the wild emotions between his parents - worrying that they'll divorce, or come to harm. He's a great character, and written so well.

Stephen King does an incredible job of conveying that irrational childlike terror (view spoiler)

I couldn't wait to get to the next part of the story and I thought about what was happening in the story constantly this week. I've already started listening to the sequel, Doctor Sleep, simply because I needed more King in my life. ...more
