My grandson is just seven and precious and I bought this book for him (for later). My guess is that the book would work for 12-year-olds but I would highly recommend it to teenagers and adults. We suffer mightily in this nation from our rampant inability to identify reality from myth, superstition, propaganda and bullshit.

Amazingly clear introduction to science and how it helps discover the magic in nature. Perhaps it has been written for young readers and/or for people with little science background.
