"I can well imagine an atheist's last words: "White, white! L-L-Love! My God!" - and the deathbed leap of faith. Whereas the agnostic, if he stays true to his reasonable self, if he stays beholden to dry, yeastless factuality, might try to explain the warm light bathing him by saying, "Possibly a f-f-failing oxygenation of the b-b-brain," and, to the very end, lack imagination and miss the better story."

I almost feel like I need to read ABOUT the book before reviewing it, because it left me feeling mystified and uncertain. I was completely drawn into the book, completely taken up by Pi Patel's experiences and of course by his relationship with the tiger in the lifeboat... but clearly there were other things going on that actually meant more to the author.

This is a particularly odd and imaginative story. I'm not so sure I agree with all the hype it got, but it was intriguing enough. Pi is the son of a zookeeper in India. Pi actively seeks out and tries on for size a variety of other faiths (an amusing and intriguing idea). When the family moves to Canada, a shipwreck leaves Pi fending for himself in a lifeboat for 227 days.

This is truly a masterpiece.
Best book in the last 10 years or so, which I read.
The preface is unfortunately suggesting some religious experience ("You will believe in God if you read this book!"), which is thanksfully untrue. It's more like a wonderful psychological experience from adventures and phantasy.
And it will make you believe in good writing and the power of books.
