When I first encountered biblical textual criticism a few years ago I found the idea a little shocking. I knew the new testament was translated from Greek, but I guess that I assumed that we had the originals and all copies were the same, but instead we have copies of copies each a little different, most of the differences minor with an ocasional major one (such as when I learned that the great story of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery wasn't in the original manuscripts). With every Ehrman book I read it becomes ever more impossible to believe in the inerrancy of the christian books, or any ancient religious text for that matter, since it is highly likely that they all experienced similar changes over time. What continues to baffle me is how people can recognize the deep fallibility of the scriptures and yet still claim that the religion is true?.If the fundamental events of a religion didn't actually happen, how can the religion based on those events be said to ...more

of course i knew that the new testament is not the unerring word of god, but this book, written by a biblical scholar, explains why this is so. in very understandable language, he explores how the 'original' texts were changed (and that we do not, in fact, have the 'original' texts at all) and some of the reasons for the changes, from accidental to deliberate changes to promote a belief.

the one thing that wasn't discussed in this book was how the books in 'the bible' were chosen to be included

Excellent introduction into textual criticism in general and how it's been used to find the ways the Bible manuscripts have been changed over the centuries. A very engaging and important book. ...more
