Shermer's examination of how and why people believe weird things is immensely intriguing. As I grow older I find myself decreasingly able to believe anything that isn't backed up by evidence. Yet Shermer shows that even that isn't always good enough because of our flawed ability to discern real evidence from false. This is a highly readable and fascinating look at why seemingly "normal" and "rational" people believe weird things. Michael Shermer provides many examples of strange things people believe and also the reasons why they should not believe them. He takes aim at very specific things that are believed by some people with absolutely no evidence at all in favor of the belief and all kinds of good evidence against it. This is a good, quick read about the process of skepticism, with some concrete examples. The bulk of the book is spent on arguments against Holocaust deniers, followed by alien abduction, psychics, etc. He also gets into basic logical fallacies that people fall for when succumbing to pseudoscience.

I've read so many essays by Shermer that I was a little bored with the first quarter of the book because it was much of the same. The middle half was much more interesting, though it concentrated on weird things people believe instead of why. The last two chapters were excellent and worth the whole book. ...more
