There are two approaches one can take with respect to religious criticism. You can either argue that religion is false or that it is dangerous. George H. Smith's magnificent "Atheism: the Case Against God" is the pinnacle of the former approach, and this fine book by Sam Harris is the benchmark for the latter.

I’ve just finished ‘The End of Faith’ by Sam Harris and would strongly recommend it to everyone interested in morality in our modern world. His message is twofold, firstly he catalogues the harm religion can do (pointedly for example those men of ‘faith’ that flew the planes into the world trade towers) and secondly he emphasises the need for “finding approaches to ethics and to spiritual experience that makes no appeal to faith”.
