What Members Thought

It is hard to imagine that this would appeal to a middle grade reader. While the prose is well-written, the story line is odd and uneventful. The characters are flat, and the subject matter is dull. One would have to have a great deal of background knowledge in order to understand many of the references and relics. It mostly left me feeling cold and bored. If it hadn't been the group read for Middle Grade March, I would have abandoned it around 70 pages.

From the inside cover-
What a fine story this is?
For who does not want to read about such things?
A boy who can talk to animals.
A terrifying, perilous journey full of bravery and daring.
Knights and bandits and ghosts and thieves.
Howling wolves, heroic donkeys, and a bag of bones.

Set during the Middle Ages, Boy, as he is called, is made to go on a mission to help a stranger collect relics so this man can get into heaven. They go on several adventures and in the process, Boy discovers and learns who he is and his true calling. Just a sweet, endearing story. Read for #middlegrademarch group pick.

Read this for with a book group but it had been on my radar for a few years. I have to say I was disappointed with the book; it was a weird little thing and made a lot of nudge wink winks about gender and sexual identity because of Boy’s secret. In the end while the finale was appropriate for that time period I’m not sure it added much to help confused younger readers.
I also did not like his companion, who treats him like dirt in the beginning and then they’re suddenly thick as thieves.

I'm not really sure how I feel about the book. I did like it but it took a couple of chapters to get into the story. Then I was really excited to see where it went. But at the end I was not sure. To me it seemed to end rather abruptly?.... it didn't end how I thought it would, and not sure if I really liked the ending... ...more

What a wonderful book!! It's a coming of age for a young boy, an epic adventure, a healthy dose of spirituality and just an all around great, fun book that I love!! I definitely recommend this one!!

I enjoyed this story and the many adventures Boy was a part of. It was sad to see how Boy was treated and the cruel things that were done to him. I'm just glad there was redemption in the end.
