Had I known that a character would die from stomach cancer, I would not have read this so soon after my sister-in-law passed away from the same thing not 3 months ago. However, this book was heartbreaking, emotional, outstanding and eye opening. I knew about foot binding, and how girls were treated, but it hits home more after reading this. I really enjoyed it, it is a fast reading and provoking. This is the first novel I read by Lisa See but won’t be the last, I really like her style and how great she handled a delicate subject. This novel is a historical fiction and takes the reader in the China during the nineteenth century where the foot blinding was still the norm among the girls of all social classes and where women were considered worthless.
