I'm so glad I finally read this book! We follow Lily from childhood to old age and learn so much about Yao women's culture in nineteenth century China. She is paired at a young age with a laotong, Snow Flower. This laotong relationship is one that should (and does) become more important and intimate than any other relationship in their lives. This was just OK for me. I never felt the slightest semblance of hope. And I also always felt at arms length from the characters. I never felt truly connected to them.

I've read other books by Lisa See, and her characters always ignite this passion in me, as if I'm living amongst these beautiful Chinese women many years ago.
I was so drawn to the story of two women who become laotongs (what would be like penpals in modern day times), paired because of their matching tiny feet, a desire that would bring money, luck, and a good marriage in China in those times, and their characters in their name and birthday.
