I'm so glad I finally read this book! We follow Lily from childhood to old age and learn so much about Yao women's culture in nineteenth century China. She is paired at a young age with a laotong, Snow Flower. This laotong relationship is one that should (and does) become more important and intimate than any other relationship in their lives. This was just OK for me. I never felt the slightest semblance of hope. And I also always felt at arms length from the characters. I never felt truly connected to them.

I thought this book was beautiful and heartbreaking. I felt a lot for all the characters. The novel made me feel so many different things and, in my opinion, it takes a really well written book to make me care about the characters and feel so many different emotions.
This isn't a happy story but I am still glad that I chose to read it. I am thinking I might try and get to other books by this author. I tend to be picky about the historical fiction I end up liking.

I enjoyed reading this book.
The time period, Chinese culture at that time, the women's writing and the events that characters go through was interesting to read. I enjoyed that aspect of the story very much. The writing was easy to follow and the descriptions were also good.
On the other hand, I could not connect with the characters and although I admired their friendship, I could not feel it. I felt like it was all telling but not really showing. ...more
