Where do I begin with this review? The Great Alone is a quiet, yet powerful novel. The plot is fairly slow moving, but the character development is outstanding! This is expert level writing as it makes you feel what the characters are feeling, smell what they smell, see what they see, taste what they taste. I have never been to Alaska, but I truly feel like I was there while reading this book. I was contemplating giving this book 4-4.5 stars when I was about 3/4 of the way through it. ...more

I really enjoyed this story about the Allbrights moving to Alaska to get away from all of the political craziness of the early 70's. The father has PTSD from serving in Vietnam (although that was not a common diagnosis at the time, and erratic behavior was often a family secret), the mother is still looking for the man she knew before the war, and the daughter... well, this is the daughter's story.

It started off a little slow for me but the story and her writting more than made up for that in the end. Great story. Again she made me cry which I don't often do while reading
