This was a hard read, but I have no idea why I set it down for so long. Kristin Hannah is an excellent storyteller and I love her writing style. I will definitely pick up more of her books.

Characters

The characters within this story are so vivid and well-developed. They felt so real to me. They are flawed and complex and they truly come alive as you read this story. The complexity of these characters adds a richness that I loved. You love and root for some characters and you despise other characters, but it's not that simple.

What a wild ride. Alaskan wild, I guess you can say. (hahaha... I'll stop that now)

I'm pretty sure Alaska is calling for me. I need to go there someday.

I just finished this, so I can't completely formulate all my thoughts right now, but this survival story within a survival story was heartrending, terrifying, wild, and wonderful, much like I picture Alaska to be. I like Kristin Hannah's use of words to paint vivid pictures of people, thoughts, nature. This book had plenty of good writing. It also had plenty of repetition, plenty of formulaic writing, plenty of predictable action. I liked the descriptions of Alaska. By about disc 9 or 10 (I listened to the audio version), I was ready for the story to end. ...more
