I loved this book! I kept reading portions out loud to my husband because I just could not believe what these men endured. I am always amazed at the human spirit and this book really showcases this fortitude. Although the book focuses on one man, it was wonderful and heartbreaking to read about others. One way that I know a book is great is if it has me longing to read more about the subject, which this one has done. I want to read more about the war, more about the Japanese, and the aftermath. ...more

I am so glad to have met Louis Zamperini. Thank you Louis and Laura Hillenbrand for sharing this poignant tale of the human condition. On one side there is cruelty and pain that human beings can inflict on each other; war, and murder but yet on the other, the spirit of forgiveness and resiliency. Thankfully Louis' story teaches us what side to be on.

If you're feeling down about your life or something in it, read this book to be inspired.

11/15/14 ~ Just as good the 2nd time around and I'm really looking forward to the movie.
Re-"reading" in the audio version compliments of the library's Overdrive Media as a refresher before the movie release (my copy is still in a box somewhere in the garage after moving - this way I can unpack & read at the same time).

Very well written account of everything POW's of the Japanese went through during WWII. Inspiring. (3/26/11)

The story is amazing but the writing is disappointing. I felt as if I never really got to know any of the characters.
