Loved this story of an aging ad executive reliving her life in Manhattan by walking the streets of Manhattan on New Years Eve 1984. I lived in New York for time back in the 80's and remember how fun and fascinating the city was. Thanks to Russell of Ink and Paper blog for recommending this book- a joy to read. ...more

I had high hopes for this novel but ultimately I was left with mixed feelings. A novel about an old woman who had worked in advertising starting in the 1920s should have been right up my alley. And parts of it did work. The advertising bits were interesting. I appreciated Lillian’s wit and joie de vive. And I know others complained about the prose but I really enjoyed the writing.

Thank goodness I finally finished this book! At 283 pages I figured it for two days at most, but Lillian Boxfish took a very loooong walk. I had heard such rave reviews about this book at was excited to pick it up. But what a disappointment! While there were some interesting exchanges in the book as Lillian encounters a variety of people on her walk, for the most part it was just boring.
