Maybe a 2.5, but the first 1/2 of this book was so slow for me! It hops around between characters & different time periods in each character's life so its hard to follow. Kate Morton does a good job of describing setting, but character development is really lacking in the first half of the book, thus making it even harder to differentiate & keep straight which characters have which story going on. I loved the story, it kept me interested and guessing at how it would end. I did listen to this on audiobook and the narrator was a little hard to listen to at times.
Another hit out of the ballpark for Kate Morton fans. The setting and characters are touchable.
Kate Morton does a great service toward women in this novel. Reading between the lines, a common thread woven throughout the generations of the women in the story is how their fierce loyalty and resolve to protect the ones they love is often misunderstood rendering them harsh or the opposite what they truly are, loving and kind and protective.

I just finished the book and I did not like the ending.
On the other hand, I really enjoyed all the characters, their stories and even the side stories. And I also I liked Morton's writing although I thought the book could have been shorter.
