A beautiful coming of age story that gives a glimpse of life in Brooklyn near the time of the first world war. Long ago songs, penny candy, union men, and women who fought for equal education and the right to vote. This story reminded me of stories my grandparents told of those who had long since passed away before I was born. So many similarities of what it's still like to be a woman in today's world, yet so many differences in how far we've come.
