There's nothing quite like finishing a book and knowing that you now have a favorite to add to your list of favorite reads. While the story was as compelling a one as I've read, it was a learning novel for me, too. The absorption of Hawaii by the United States, the disease of leprosy or Hansen's disease, the leper colony of Kalaupapa on the island of Molokai (heck, the island itself), the island of Maui, early aviation. A heartwarming and heartbreaking novel about a young girl who is diagnosed with leprosy and is banished to the Hawaiian island of Molokai where they had a leper colony. Although it is a fictional book it is based on a real place and some of the characters are real.
Overall, I loved this book. It brought the history of Hawaii to life for me, which is exactly what I wanted since my husband is Hawaiian. It is a gorgeous culture and I feel like Alan Brennert does it justice. He makes me want to go and visit each place he writes of, and all of the islands, exploring all the nooks and crannies! However much I try, I'll still be a haole!

I really enjoyed this book. I felt for the main charector and even brough tears to my eyes a couple of times. I highly recommend this and look forward to reading his other book Honolulu.
