When I picked up this book, I expected to read a romance, and in a way, that's what this was, but when it came time to review I realized that, as a romance, I couldn't give it more than about 2 stars. And that's not fair, because I liked the book. So instead, I'll call it a mainstream fiction novel focusing on family and relationships. That story, I enjoyed.

Dean "Havoc" Connor is an extreme fighter who has had a tough life. His parents died when he was 9, and he spent the rest of his childhood travelling the world with his uncle, who did the best he could, but didn't offer the affection he craved. Dean always remembered, and envied, his two baby sisters, raised by an aunt who did not permit them to interact. In fact, the girls didn't know they had a big brother until the oldest was 16.

After 20 years apart, Dean gets a letter from Cam, the older of the two girls, asking him to come, and in an instant, he drops everything to return to Harmony, Kentucky. He doesn't want to acknowledge any desire or need for a relationship with his sisters, but his actions continually belie his intentions.

This was a touching story of a man finding the love and comfort of family. There was a really touching moment early in the book where Cam hugs him, and though he doesn't hug her back, he has an intense emotional reaction to a loving, platonic contact.

Now, since this is sold as a romance, I do feel that I should touch on the relationship between Dean and Eve, which I found utterly boring. They meet in a bar, she turns out to be Cam's best friend, they want each other from the moment they meet and get into one another's pants shortly thereafter....I think the trouble is that while Dean was a wonderful character, Eve did not come alive for me. She did nothing more than play her role in the story. Dean's sisters both came alive more than she did. Heck, even Roger, Cam's sinister boyfriend, managed to come alive for me more than she did.

But like I said, it was a good read. Well written and engaging. This was my first by Lori Foster, and so far, so good. I'll definitely read the sequels. ...more
