Translated from Swedish - this book is a gift to an avid reader. What came to mind when I read this book was - not a word was wasted. I flet compelled to read and I drank it up like a thirsty reader that I am.
It is a mystery that begins with a journalist losing a trial for slander. Punished by his own peers, he takes an opportunity to work for a wealthy business man to solve an cold crime - the vanishing of his niece 25 years ago.

Several Goodreads friends loved it and many of my coworkers thought it was great, even the guy who works for me who never reads books. Going in, my expectations might have been too high. If half stars were allowed, I would give this book 3.5 as I'm interested enough in the Lisbeth character to read the next book.

Pretty intense thriller, at times on the edge of my seat. A few raunchy parts, which seems to be more prevalent among thrillers.
Very curious about the author. Young guy who died shortly after he turned in the manuscripts for this book and others, I'm even more curious about how it all came about, especially with what I would call a bit of an abrupt ending to the story. Could be a sequel, I suppose, if the books that were turned in have, in fact, the same characters, at least the character, the t ...more

A slow, gradual mystery with lots of subplots--at times, it's not clear what the mystery actually is. I was interested enough in the characters to hang in there for a couple hundred pages, and then it really took off. I will absolutely be buying the other books in the series, probably as soon as they come out in hardback.

Well-rendered characters, complex intrigue, lots of money and atmosphere. It's worth a read, especially if you like modern thrillers. Disappointed by the turn towards extremely dark adn morbid. which seemed inevitable (there is a pathological killer out there, after all), but weighted the book too much. Cinematic.

Pretty much everyone I know who has read this book says the same thing-it takes a while to get in to but then it's great. I felt like after the first 150 pages I was hooked but that's not to say that I hated the first 150 pages because I didn't-it just wasn't as interesting as the rest.
There are more than enough reviews out there that recount the story with much more detail than I can almost a year and a half after I read it so I won't bother. The bottom line is the book takes a while to get go ...more

Loved this book! Can't wait to read the sequel. It did take me about 50 pages to get into it.

I really enjoyed this book. I'd heard from a few people that is was hard to get into, but within the first 30 pages I was hooked. The author really took us down a lot of different twists and turns throughout the book. Even near the end I had that feeling of "ok it's over", but there were still more surprises. I'm very curious about the next two books, but I think I'll take a little break before jumping into the next one. I highly recommend this book and am so glad I borrowed it to read.

Hard to get into this book and initially I began reading and put it down for another book. Picked it back up a month later and really enjoyed once the mystery began. The last 100 pages or so were hard to finish because it seemed like the plot had been resolved with lots of filler and small details at the end. Overall really enjoyed it and looking forward to the last 2 books in the series.

I really liked the mystery but did not like the underlying financial story as much. Overall, it was a good book. I'm excited to read the next one!
