What a fascinating historical novel. Brooks is a master at creating interesting characters in stress, working to figure out how to survive and keep their sense of self and moral bearings. This book focuses on the history of a Jewish religious text, called the Sarajevo Hagaddah. I don't think it's a real book but is based on other famous Jewish texts. I was a little disappointed by this book, but only because I expected great things. The story was interesting and the research very good, but I wanted more insight than what was given. Although there was action there seemed to be missing suspense, or that something that just keeps you stuck in the story.

great story line with lots of twists and turns. Lots of little stories interwoven with smooth transitions. interesting charachters, the main female is australian. again, fiction is not my favorite but anyone who loves books in general will enjoy this story about a loved/hated book, and lovers of books!

Read this for book club. Interesting to see how the author wove the whole story together.

Really enjoyed this book, and it was my first Brooks novel. I especially found the stories set back in various places/times fascinating. The book felt more one of short stories with an overarching narrative that tied them all together very nicely. If you are a historical fiction fan this is the book for you.

Shrug. Great concept. But I really did not like the main character-and she's the thread that binds all the stories together. I actually loved all the back stories and wish Brooks had spent more time on them instead of on Hanna. Still, interesting and worth the read.
